Overthinking Without Writing Is Another Kind of Paralysis—Just Write
write to try it on for sound, tone, message, and reach
When I was a student I kept a large index card taped over my desk. I didn’t know at the time that writing coaching was in my future. I took for granted that I wrote all the time. Didn’t everyone? My index card said this:
At the opening of my Foundation book building self-study course, I have three instructions:
Don’t censor yourself; write what is top of mind. Don’t overthink this.
Don’t write and then rewrite a better version, or select your best responses to submit to me..
Write without judgment—because I won’t be judging you.
Doesn’t a reminder that no one is watching or keeping track of your grammatical errors and mis-chosen words feel good? Sure, it does.
I meet alot of writers that aren’t sure they can do this writing thing, or make a book of it. But they haven’t written much yet.
Get in conversation with the page and then reassess how you feel. For many of us, the mission to write comes from a place we don’t touch until we get still.
Write. Write anything. Write anywhere.
Don’t say you can’t, until the page shows you. Don’t think. Write!
The way to a book is a page at a time.
